Dear Parents and Community:

I hope your child is finding success in their education and personal development at Comstock Public Schools. Our numerous educational practitioners and support staff work hard to meet the needs of each of our students. We recognize the each child has unique learning needs. Our district is committed to utilizing the latest instructional techniques to meet the needs of our diverse community of learners.

The purpose of special education programming and services is to assist students who have an educationally diagnosed disability (per the guidelines established through the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education, in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA) in receiving a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). We take this responsibility seriously and have a well trained staff capable of meeting the needs of children with disabilities. Additionally, we are part of the Eastern Service Area of Kalamazoo Regional Education Service Agency (KRESA). We have many expanded collaborative programming options available through our partners at KRESA program sites as well as within several other county districts. By working together, we are able to provide a continuum of services to meet the unique needs of our students through the supports and services available.

All educational programming decisions for eligible students are made by the Individualized Education Planning (IEP) Team established for that student. This team is charged with the responsibility of meeting (at least annually) to discuss the supports and services that are educationally necessary for a child with a disability to profit from his/her education. This team takes its direction from the information provided to them as a result of a multidisciplinary educational evaluation.

If you have further questions about: program sites, services, special education eligibility, programs available through Comstock Public Schools or KRESA, the IDEA, or if you are concerned that your child may have a disability, I encourage you to contact me at 269.250.8923 or by e-mail at: pelleritoj@comstockps.org.
