My name is Yalin Tan. I’m so glad that I have such a great opportunity to work at CELA. I finished my master degree from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China last year. My major is Teaching Chinese to Speakers of other languages.

In the past three years, I have spent most of my time on studying and teaching. In May to July 2016, I participated in the school internship program, and went to Indonesia to teach Chinese in the Fenghuang Mandarin School. Then, when I came back to my university, I am so lucky that I got a part time job to teach Chinese in the institute for international education of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. But this job is not my destination; I'd like to find a job which is more challenging. So, with my young dream, with my longing for the future, and with some curiosity, I went to Bangladesh in the spring of 2017, and worked as a volunteer Chinese language teacher in an international elementary school. After that, I applied the teaching program from Confucius Institute, came to Grand Rapids, Michigan and became a teacher assistant in Chinese immersion program in 2018.

I really love teaching Chinese to kids, because it made me grow up and enrich my experience in teaching and class management. Engaging and encouraging are the key factors in my teaching philosophy. I engage my students with a kind of interactive and fun classroom activities and teaching materials. In additional to this, I try to create a positive and encouraging learning environment for pupils, rooted in mutual respect and support to each other.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading, listening to music, and doing some handcrafts, such as paper cutting and paper folding.
